Arsenal Women are World Champions!
It was perhaps one of the most thrilling matches football has ever seen. The European champions faced the South American champions at the Emirates in the final of the first ever FIFA Champions Cup for the world title.
The home side Gunners started the match better, being more dominant on the ball throughout and creating more chances. Olivia Smith opened the scoring in the 15th minute, following up on a missed chance by Stina Blackstenius. Blackstenius' shot rebounded off the goalkeeper, and Smith did not hesitate.
However, Corinthians managed to equalize before halftime, taking advantage of a messy situation in the goal area. Although they are a team from Brazil, they also had strong fan support at Emirates Stadium.
Lotte Wubben-Moy, who wore the captain's armband for most of the tournament, put the Gunners back in front with a header. Just when it looked like Arsenal could start celebrating victory, a penalty was awarded in the second minute of injury time after a foul by Katie McCabe, which Corinthians converted to send the match into extra time.
However, Arsenal did not falter in extra time and maintained their lead after Caitlin Foord's goal. Nevertheless, their joy was marred by the fact that goalkeeper Anneke Borbe was seriously injured in the last minute and had to be carried off on a stretcher by paramedics. Daphne van Domselaar stepped in for the last few minutes and also received a medal in Borbe's jersey.
Frida Maanum was named the most valuable player of the match, and Anneke Borbe was named the best goalkeeper. NY Gotham celebrates third place after defeating AS FAR.
