Olivia Smith goal ends Manchester City unbeaten streak
Today, Alessia Russo had the opportunity to become only the third WSL player to celebrate her birthday with a goal. Although that didn't happen, the 27-year-old Arsenal star still received a birthday gift in the form of a win, three points, and a theoretical chance at the title.
However, the start of the match suggested otherwise, with former Gooner Vivianne Miedema attacking the goal in the opening seconds, but her shot went wide. The only goal of the match was scored in the 17th minute by Olivia Smith, who attacked the empty net after a mistake by goalkeeper Yamashita.
The Gooners had more chances in the match, but both goalkeepers remained 100% effective. For Daphne van Domselaar, it was her first start since November 2025, and she celebrated her return with several saves and a clean sheet.
City's star signing Sam Coffey, who came on in the second half, was unable to change the score. In addition to the victory, the Gooners can also celebrate the return of two popular players - Chloe Kelly and, most importantly, Leah Williamson, who made her first appearance since her calf injury and immediately made a save against Vivianne Miedema.
This is City's first defeat since September 5, 2025. However, they still lead the table by 8 points ahead of Manchester United. Arsenal have one game in hand.
