She was playing football in the garden from the time she could walk, helped by the fact that both her brother and dad loved the game.

She played on a boys’ team until she was 12.

Football was not her only serious sport growing up. She said cricket was actually her main sport until she was about 14 or 15, and that she played for Kent and for the Southeast Stars franchise before choosing football.

Kelly Smith was her childhood role model.

One of her earliest football memories involved David Beckham. Gale said her brother was in the Arsenal academy age group with Cruz Beckham, and that Beckham would show her how to kick a ball from the sidelines.
