Kelly began playing football at seven with her cousins on a municipal pitch in the Cité Jaune neighbourhood of Bonneuil-sur-Marne — and later said the ball had never left her after those first games.

Kelly gave up several months of unpaid salary owed to her by Sampdoria so that her complicated transfer to Parma could finally be completed.

Kelly was once described as quiet, discreet and uncomfortable in front of the camera, but later became known for the contagious laughter and positive energy she brings to the France squad.

Everton supporters welcomed Kelly with the Beatles-inspired chant “All we need is Kelly Gago,” fulfilling her childhood dream of hearing a full stadium sing her name.

Kelly was one of two players selected by Parma to share their personal experiences as part of the club’s “Win This Match” campaign against racism, prejudice and discrimination.
