Suzanne Wrack on Leah Williamson: the most natural of unnatural leaders
Commentator and women's football podcast host Suzanne Wrack pays tribute to England captain Leah Williamson in her recent article. She is only 28, yet she has already led England to back-to-back Euro titles. On top of that, she won the Champions League this year with Arsenal, where she also holds the record for most appearances. And it’s not just England that adores her. According to Wrack, Leah Williamson is “the most natural of unnatural leaders.”
- At 28 years old, Leah Williamson led England to their second successive Women’s Euro title, which marked the first-ever major tournament win on foreign soil for a senior England side, with exceptional performances at both Arsenal and national level.
- Teammates and coaches (both England's Sarina Wiegmann and Arsenal's Renée Slegers) praised Williamson’s maturity, ability to unify the squad, and her consistency despite personal introversion—defining her as a leader who thrives off the field with quiet strength and on the field with quiet authority.
- Williamson continues to champion causes such as LGBTQ+ rights, anti-racism, environmental protection, and women’s equality, positioning herself as a socially engaged role model beyond her sporting successes. After last Euro, she also opened about having endometriosis, highlighting the imporance of women's health.
- While already celebrated for her back-to-back European triumphs, Williamson has declared that “this story is not done yet”, keeping her sights set on future glory, including the 2027 Women’s World Cup in Brazil.
