Maelys was often among the last children chosen for football at school, but the experience motivated her to improve — years later, a community sports court in her hometown was named after her.

Her move to Chelsea completed a childhood circle: during her first visit to London at around ten years old, her mother offered to buy her a football shirt and Maelys immediately chose Chelsea.

Away from football, Maelys would have loved to become a psychologist working in prisons, driven by her fascination with understanding why people make the choices they do.

Fashion is one of Maelys’ biggest interests away from football — during one season at Montpellier, she wore six different hairstyles and regularly expressed herself through her clothes, hair, make-up and nails.

One thing Maelys struggles to find in England is exactly the right French crème fraîche, so she once returned from France with around 15 tubs packed into her suitcase.

Her father created an Instagram account to follow her Chelsea journey, but once misunderstood “drama queen” as “drag queen” and immediately demanded to know why her team-mate had called her that.

Maelys describes herself as a “false shy” person: she may initially seem reserved, but once she feels comfortable, she becomes playful, talkative and loves teasing the people around her.
