Goalkeeper Mia Hamant dies at 21 after battle with kidney cancer
Mia Hamant, the standout goalkeeper for the University of Washington Huskies women’s soccer team, has tragically passed away at 21 after a courageous fight against Stage 4 kidney cancer. Her teammates, coaches and the entire Husky community have paid tribute to her strength, impact and spirit.
- Her diagnosis was announced in April 2025: she was found to have Stage 4 SMARCB1-deficient kidney cancer, a rare and aggressive form of the disease.
- During her time at Washington, she had been one of the top goalkeepers in her conference: in 2024 she posted the third-lowest goals against average in program history (0.66).
- Mia was widely praised by her coaches and fellow players for her strength, courage, kindness and the positive impact she had on everyone around her.
- The Washington athletic department and broader community will release details of a memorial or celebration of life in her honour.
