It's coming home again! The Lionesses are European champions
They did it again. Even though Spain scored the first goal, The Lionesses managed to take the match into extra time thanks to a header from Alessia Russo, and then won the European Championship for the second time after a penalty shootout. How did it happen?
- Spain took the lead via a Mariona Caldentey header, but Alessia Russo equalised with a header from Kelly’s assist in the second half. The match remained level after 120 minutes, leading to penalties.
- Demonstrating poise under pressure, Kelly launched her trademark confident run-up and smashed her spot-kick into the net—the telling moment making it two successive Euros where she has settled finals for England.
- Hampton saved penalty kicks from Mariona Caldentey and Aitana Bonmatí, shifting momentum to England before Kelly struck the winner.
- Sarina Wiegman’s side repeatedly came from behind in knockout rounds. Kelly’s belief she would score—“I don’t miss penalties twice”—epitomised their resolve.
- Kelly’s achievement adds to her reputation as a clutch performer and underscores England’s growing legacy, as they become the first English team to win a major tournament abroad under Wiegman’s leadership, securing her third consecutive Euro title.
- England became only the second country after Germany to defend its European title, with Chloe Kelly scoring the decisive goal for the second time. In 2022, it went into extra time. Now it's penalties. But its still one and only Chloe Kelly.
