New rule in England. No League cup for UWCL clubs
Teams playing in the Champions League will not compete in the League Cup. From the current season, this rule applies to Arsenal, Manchester United, and Chelsea. However, the rule will only apply from next season onwards.
- The proposal — reportedly supported by a majority of clubs — would remove UWCL-qualified teams from the League Cup entirely, instead of giving them byes directly to quarter-finals.
- As part of the rework, the current group-stage format of the League Cup may also be scrapped, replaced by a “Swiss-style” system similar to that used in the Champions League.
- If implemented next season, the changes would mark a big shift: teams like Arsenal W.F.C., Chelsea F.C. Women and Manchester United W.F.C. — currently in UWCL — would not participate in the Women’s League Cup at all.
- The motivation behind the proposal is partly to reduce fixture congestion and address player-welfare concerns, given the growing number of competitions (domestic league, Champions League, possible future club tournaments) and a heavier schedule for top clubs.
- Critics warn the rule change could de-value the League Cup, since some of the strongest and most popular clubs would be excluded — potentially lowering competitive balance and fan interest.
