Women's Copa America criticised after Euros success
Compared to this summer’s Euro 2025 — which drew record crowds, ran seamlessly, and delivered standout performances topped by England’s victory — the women’s Copa America has struggled to keep pace. Let's find out why.
- While UEFA Women’s Euro 2025 was praised for record-breaking attendance, seamless organization, and high-level performances, the Copa América Femenina 2025 in Ecuador has drawn criticism for poor logistics, low turnout, and inadequate refereeing.
- Only two stadiums were used during the group stage, forcing multiple games per day on the same pitch. To preserve the grass, teams were not allowed to warm up on the field, leading players to stretch in small indoor areas, often side-by-side with opponents.
- Brazilian legend Marta called out the organizers for “saddening” conditions, referencing viral images of players warming up in a 20m² painted room. She questioned the decision to prioritize pitch preservation over basic player experience and safety.
- Brazilian forward Kerolin highlighted the disparity with Europe via X (formerly Twitter), writing: “While at the Euros they are breaking records in technology, we are warming up in a room with a maximum of 20 square metres, smelling of paint.”
