WSL introduces new salary floor for senior players

WSL introduces new salary floor for senior players

In the newly introduced salary floor, WSL players aged 23 and older are guaranteed a minimum annual wage of £40,000 in the top division.

  • The salary floor also applies in lower tiers, with adapted minimums by age group and division to ensure players across WSL and WSL2 meet a baseline wage above the national living wage.
  • WSL2 has adopted fully professional criteria, meaning players in that division will also benefit from minimum salary provisions, allowing them to focus on football rather than juggling secondary jobs.
  • Alongside the salary floor, new rules limit how much clubs can spend on wages—clubs can allocate up to 80% of their women’s team revenue, plus a capped owner contribution (reportedly £4 million) toward wage spending.
  • The reforms seek to reduce inequality across clubs, ensure more players can commit fully to their careers, and prevent situations in which athletes have to supplement wages through other employment.
